Industrial Symbiosis

The basic concept of this project is to produce architectural components (which are comprised of recycled materials) from the industrial area in East London. Basically, nowadays industrial areas in East London seem to be left behind current advanced formation of industrial areas. They have kept 1960s or 1970s industrial system in 21century. Thus, even though the industry can produce and manufacturing products, they have lost a lot of efficiency and energy which can be saved by embedding advanced system into current industry system.

As a result, I was quite interested in redevelopment of current industrial area project which has high performance in terms of energy saving, better working environment and cooperative industries which could make synergy. I would like to bring “Kalundborg symbiosis” project in Denmark. This industry area has different characteristic thing with East London industrial zone. Generally, Kalundborg is not called as just industrial area. It is called as Eco-Industrial Park(EIP).

An eco-industrial park (EIP) is an industrial park in which businesses cooperate with each other and with the local community in an attempt to reduce waste and pollution, efficiently share resources (such as information, materials, water, energy, infrastructure, and natural resources), and help achieve sustainable development, with the intention of increasing economic gains and improving environmental quality. An EIP may also be planned, designed, and built in such a way that it makes it easier for businesses to co-operate, and that results in a more financially sound, environmentally friendly project for the developer.

In particular, the crucial point of system in Kalundborg is that one industry’s by-product or waste is raw material for the other industry. This ameliorated industrial type would achieve recycling waste management in a different way. Beyond recycling tangible materials such as steel, wood, glass, they are re-utilizing wasted energy as well. For instance, STATOIL Refinery’s treated waste water is used for cooling water for ASNAES power plant and this power plant’s waste steam is operation energy for STATOIL Refinery as well as Novo Nordisk(Pharmaceutical industry). In addition, fly ash from the power station is raw material for producing cement and paving road and its desuphurization of flue gas is used for producing gypsum in GYPROC company.

It means that the Kalundborg has energy infrastructure which helps to transfer and exchange their by-product and wasted energy among its industries. When it comes to East London, industries play separated behavior even though they are located in same industrial estate. Therefore, What I conceived in this point is to merge theses separated industries into second or third level of domain which has energy infrastructure in order to make it easy to exchange their wasted energy, by-product.

Moreover,I would like to open up the possibilities make combined industrial area to manufacture composite architectural components and products from the this complex Eco-Industry Park or the new territories itself which is above existing industry zone can be new zone to make new type of city, relating to industrial area. I am quite eager to keep producing and constructing in relation to East London industrial zone.
