Thesis

 

This project is an investigation into how sustainable growth and resource efficiency can be achieved in the future city particularly, in relation to conditions of London.

 

Basically, west and central London is almost fully urbanized. Considering expansion of London should take into account extensive void area in the east zone. One interesting aspect is that the property of extensive void is marshlands. Therefore, an investigation into living on the marshland should be taken place in order to deal with future city expansion in London. In accordance with those conditions, currently, Great London Authority has plans to activate east London with spending billion pounds a year.

 

However, the fact that coping with Tidal Floods should have to be considered even though east London has a vast land and possibilities to be developed and urbanized. Moreover, general information of climate change which trigger more melting glacier has led the effect of flood to be severer.

 

Therefore, defending and alleviating a damage of tidal floods should be considered when planning in east London in order to keep the value of new development and existing life of residents. The contradictory concepts between development in east London and devastation by tidal floods should be reconciled through architectural proposition. As a result, achieving these values can be seen as accomplishing sustainable growth in a holistic point of view.

 

Hypothesis

 

The main axis of this project is to deal with constructing future city in east London, which can also perform tidal floods barriers. These ambivalent housing can supply housing and space as well as protecting existing communities and land values from the floods. The second important aspect is to shape symbiotic relationship among constructed new industries and finally this is mainly for producing housing / barrier and next purpose is to reduce carbon footprint through considering reutilizing by-product and waste. Moreover, desirable proportion among industries (algae farm, grain farm, domestic animal farm, biodiesel production industry, processing food industry) in terms of spatial area, productivity can be set based on a mathematical calculation. Therefore, the industrial process can make contribution to increase local employment and main power to construct new sustainable city and barrier.

 

Design Methodology

 

1. Mathematical relationship

In order to achieve hypothesis, firstly, scoping mathematical data out have been specifically researched in order to make this project more elaborate. For example, how much biodiesel can be produced from algae per one day and for doing this how many land should be allocated to algae ponds, and how much triglyceride (This is kind of a neutral fat, main source for producing biodiesel.), how many area should be allocated to farming, artificial marshes, dwelling and so on. This kind of conception applied to other industries and final output is make strong relationship among different relationship, which based on one standard factor. As this standard factor is changed, other information and parameter also changed. Thus, finally, the desirable size of project and people can recognize how much energy is going to be surplus or required.

 

2. House material

The main concept is to utilize existing local material such as bamboo, wood, reed and so on in east London. However, London does not have strong local material. Thus, first concept for material is use marshes as a construction material. In South Korea, they have traditional construction material so called red clay brick house. The property of red clay is quite similar to mud. Through making clay in a brick shape and burning it to enhance strength and be watertight, houses can be constructed.

Second concept is that currently, algae can be converted to eco-plastic. Compared to other biomass, algae has great amount of oil inside them, it means that the chemical property of this creature is similar to petroleum which is main source to produce plastic. Especially, algae plastic is biodegradable as well as has good performing quality. Therefore, this is also can be seen as a kind of local related material.(In this step, this project is based on algae industry.)

 

3. Tidal power station(association with existing riverside industries)

Basically, Thames River has a twice tidal fluctuation a day around 5pm and 12am.(this depends on seasons) and the differentiated level is around 5m in east London. It can be regarded as a great source to produce energy. Additionally, east London especially, around Tilbury Port where is a potential site for this project, some of the industries are located there. Thus, one other unit is for generating electricity by tidal power which can make associated relationship among those riverside industries. Therefore, some of materials for constructing this project on the can be supported from these heavy industries and even port importing behavior and make more close relationship together.

 

Design Criteria

 

Based on the mathematical calculation and tangible information, project can catch the desirable points for new future city growth and how much energy can inflow and be consumed in the project. These data can make this project more convincible and can find proper point of view for architectural behavior. Moreover, House / barrier can perform properly the ambivalent ways to accommodate people as well as alleviate tidal floods and construction this can have relationship with those data. The data can be seen as an important parameter (background information for how many population is proper to X type, size of Urban Sample) to construct this house / barrier as well.

 

Anticipated Outcome

 

This project can be a new model for agriculture in the city because the agriculture is main catalyst resolving all of industries and main power to deal with establish new sustainable city in east London on the marshes. This newly constructed city can main contributor to satisfy different borough’s housing requirement as well as can be a guardian of existing communities toward threats of floods. Through this architectural proposition, floods in east London are not danger any more, floods also can be considered as a new source for shaping new city in east London.
