Workshop Day at Oxford Brookes: (re)constructing the city: integrating urban design into humanitarian response

The workshop at Oxford Brookes was a day of discussions and exercises to allow us to explore the different ways urban and humanitarian practitioners describe, think about and work in cities. With specific reference to the humanitarian response to Haiti, there were a series of exercises designed to make us balance the desires of the community focussing on rebuilding their own lives, with the outside knowledge of the architect who in some cases knows better. What we found out was than in most cases the architect does not and the only way one can understand is to talk to local people and be humble and arrogant at the same time.
